Data collection and sources
A needs assessment was conducted with school faculty both before and after project implementation. Opinion surveys were conducted with both faculty and students before and after the redesign project. Also, library circulation statistics were analyzed from previous and current school years.

Data analysis and interpretation
The Circulation Statistics graph presents circulation data before 1:1 deployment, after deployment, and during and after ARP implementation. It is important to note that statistics from the first two years of deployment were omitted from analysis. During these two years our laptops and accessories were circulated through the Destiny system. This skewed the circulation statistics creating an artificial inflation in circulation. The blue and red bars represent the 2008-2009 & 2009-2010 school years. These were the two full school years directly preceding laptop deployment. The green & purple bars indicate school years 2012-2013 & 2013-2014, the past two years of deployment and years in which laptops were circulated on a separate system. The teal bar at the end of each group represents circulation rates for this school year. Circulation statistics from April – June of this year are not yet available. In this chart the decrease in circulation is dramatically evident. Although, the increase in circulation this year is not dramatic or present in every month a general trend of increased circulation is evident in 6 of the 8 months indicated in each school year.

In the next data set, the first table depicts the average circulation and standard deviation for each year previously identified. In this chart, the initial decrease in circulation and increase throughout this school year, during project implementation, is also evident. In the second table, the mean difference is presented. The before and after deployment school years have been combined. In the years before and after deployment the mean difference displays a decrease of just over 465 in circulation. When the mean difference, between the combined post deployment years, is compared to circulation of the current school year a mean increase of 15.56 is identified. In the mean difference table, it should also be noted that statistics from only August – March for each year were included. This allowed for a more accurate comparison since data from April – June was not available for the current year. Overall, all circulation data supports the noted decrease in circulation and more importantly, in this year of project implementation, the first increase in circulation since laptop deployment is evident. Although this partial school year is not conclusive evidence of a sustained increase, the results are very encouraging that the changes have had an impact on circulation that will hopefully continue in a positive direction.

With the change in student population, in both surveys approximately 1/3 of the student body responded to both the pre and post opinion surveys. Overall, reported daily use of the library has increased significantly and there is a noticeable decrease in the number of students who report never using the library. This increase in use has been most noticeable during our lunch periods. Prior to the creation of the Learning Commons we saw an average of 10-15 students per lunch period on a given day. With the change in design, we have now seen as many as 45 students in one lunch period, with a typical average of 20-25 per lunch period. Another item worth noting is a significant decrease in the need to remind students of acceptable behavior, primarily related to the noise level in the room. Prior to providing the Learning Commons space, it was necessary to provide several reminders in a given lunch period. With our new arrangement, behavior correction has only been necessary a couple of times.

On the teacher opinion surveys approximately 1/3 of the faculty responded to the pre-opinion survey and almost 1/2 responded to the post opinion survey. Teachers reportedly generally the same level of use in both surveys, with a slight increase in responses for weekly and annual reports of library use. Overall, the faculty has been very gracious in expressing their approval and appreciation of the changes in the facility. In addition to the regular request for collaborative instruction and research support, three teachers have recently requested instructional support who had not requested or accepted offerings of these services before. Although this cannot be directly attributed to the redesign efforts the overall advocacy aspects of the project do seem to be having a positive impact on library services within the school.

In general to determine the effectiveness of this project, circulation and service use statistics would need to continue to be monitored for at least another year or two. I would say to anyone considering a project of this nature, that the scope of this project should not be a detriment if it seems to large an undertaking. I was ready to take on this project and had been considering the needs and corrective options for some time. I am very proud to have had the support and opportunity that allowed these ideas to become a reality.
